A few metres from the ‘Voie Verte’ – a path made for cyclists, horse-riders and hikers on an old railway line – between Foix and St Girons in the Ariège, this small chateau dating back to 1591, has been transformed into a large upscale gîte.
In fact, there are two gites in the building: a large gite with 6 bedrooms (and 3 bathrooms) and a small gîte with two bedrooms, each with a shower room. If need be, the two lodgings are rented together to make a very large gite with 20 beds; quite rare in the Pyrenees.
The manor house has been restored with love and great care by the owner, originally an artisan carpenter but able to work on everything: plaster, masonry, zinc work does not scare him. The result is a work of art. Everything has been thought out and adapted to the building: the choice of wood for the kitchen, hand-made double-glazing (in wood of course) for each opening, the floor in old tiles or flagging rather than linoleum or cheap parquet, the copper gutters… and the original features (doors, stone sinks, stairs) incorporated into the fabric of the renovation.
Today groups of hikers and cyclists are fighting a way to his door to rent this superb accommodation: it is already booked for 6 weeks of summer 2021
2 separate gites … or “Very big gite”
The large gîte: 6 bedrooms, three shower rooms, 3 toilets, a large fully equipped kitchen, a spacious living room with fireplace, a covered balcony and very efficient central heating … wood. The boiler is in the basement – installed in September 2019 – and it heats the whole house as well as domestic hot water with logs or pellets. And since it is a region of forests …
The small gîte is on the ground floor: it has two bedrooms, each with a shower room, and an equipped kitchen / living room. Separate entrance. Together, the two lodgings – over 350m² – are rented as a “very large gîte” for € 2500 per week in season.
There is a garage in the mansion, currently used as a carpenter’s workshop, but which can be used for something else… bicycle workshop?
The garden covers approximately 3500m² and includes a vegetable garden, children’s games, a henhouse, a field with a few sheep and several terraces. A septic tank – 5000l – up to standards.
Finally, the tower. The last element of the house to finish: Jacuzzis on each floor? Spaces for meditation? You decide…
It may not be a real château, but the 16th century building has a lot of character! The renovation was well done, the decor too. What is missing is some serious marketing to bring in some ‘old stone’ enthusiasts. The proximity of the ‘greenway’ makes one think of a café or tea room project for the thirsty crowds who use the path from March to December. A very nice property at a good price: no hesitation, go for it!
