This business is very similar to the other B&Bs and hotels we sell… except it floats and sails throughout the South West of France. And, if well managed, generates much more income than a Guest House.

There are three main elements involved:

The hotel-barge. It is a 30 metre barge which has been converted into a luxury floating hotel. It is currently used to take groups of up to 6 people on week-long cruises to the Bordeaux vineyards and tourist sites of  South West France. Containing three double guest bedrooms (all en-suite), a lounge/dining room, 2 crew cabins, an owner/pilot cabin, a kitchen, a pantry and a laundry room as well as a large sun terrace, it is kept in perfect condition and sold fully furnished down to the last linen napkin. The engine, battery charger, navigation system, water tank, etc. have all been reviewed and approved by the competent authorities.

The Business: there is no point in having a barge if you don’t know what to do with it. This is why the entire company is sold with the boat. This includes all routes currently in use, the tour operators the current owners work with, the extensive list of past customers (who often become repeat customers), the website and – most important of all – the opportunity to do a period of training with current owners. Finally, there is a Mercedes People Carrier that comes with the company: essential for collecting guests from the airport and transferring them to the boat as well as making short transfers between the barge and tourist attractions.

The Lease. Not everyone wants to spend 12 months a year on a boat, so it’s handy to have a land base for the winter months. The lease in question gives the owners the right to rent a beautiful two-story house on the banks of the canal at a very advantageous rent. The icing on the cake is that the barge can be moored right in front of the house (it’s a VNF house in fact).

These three elements are indivisible. It’s all or nothing.

To run the business, buyers will need a crew. Typically, a crew will consist of a pilot (who requires a pilot’s license), a chef, a steward/stewardess and a driver. Usually, a couple purchasing the business will perform two of these functions while employing the other two crew members. Pilots and chefs are quite easy to find for the “season” on the waterways of southern France. This is why the company is sold without employees or employment contracts.

Our opinion:

What is striking about this sale is its transparency. Unlike most B&B or gîte businesses, it is owned and managed by a French SARL (limited company) and buyers will have access to all accounts, licenses, authorisations, leases and contracts relating to the business. A highly reputable accounting firm maintains the accounts and all taxes, duties and declarations are paid and up to date. There are no pitfalls that we know of…and if there are, these will become apparent during the training session with the current owners. In our opinion, this represents a very good deal.
