Mountain biking is a big sport in the Pyrenees and there are any number of spectacular signed trails. This mountain hostel (or big ‘gîte de groupe’) caters for VTT enthusiasts as well as hikers and skiers. There is more and more demand from road-cyclists … because of the extraordinary location: in the Vallée d’Oueil, between the terrifying Port de Balès and the infamous Col de Peyresourde.

The property consists of:
– a traditional Pyrenean farmhouse
– a fully-renovated 12-bed gîte de groupe
– two two-storey barns (stone-built: good condition)
– wood-sheds, gateway, courtyard and a bit of land with veg patch

Pyrenees mountain hostel

It is located on the edge of a small mountain village with a restaurant: between the ski resort of Bourg d’Oueil and the spa town of Bagnères-de-Luchon. The big ski resort of Peyragudes is 15 minutes drive and Spain is a half-hour drive away over the Col de Portillon.

The 18th century farmhouse – where the owners live – has been refurbished with care. Nearly all the original features have been retained (doors, floorboards, staircase, bread oven) while plumbing, electrics, insulation and heating have all been brought up to date. Above all they have installed a superb wood-burning furnace, fed by either logs or wood pellets, which heats all the water and radiators in the house and the gite. Big farm kitchen and Godin range (French equivalent of an Aga) downstairs, two big bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. The attic is ready to convert into more accommodation.

The gite. This is a 120m² barn that has been completely gutted and refurbished as a 12-person gite d’étape on two floors. The upper floor (access from the street) is a vast kitchen/dining/lounge area. Downstairs there are three big bedroom/dormitories each sleeping 4 guests and each equipped with a shower room and wc. Access directly into the farm courtyard.

The out-houses. The farm (the biggest in the village) had space for any amount of cows and ewes. The two traditional barns were designed to house animals on the ground floor and to store hay on the upper floor. The current owners had plans to convert both barns into independent two-bedroom gites, so they have kept them dry and maintained, with good slate roofing. There is both electricity and water on site … and mains drainage!

Our opinion:
This is a year-round business catering for summer mountain-bikers, hikers and families and, in winter, for skiers. The location is exceptional – between two of the Tour de France’s mythical climbs, beside a family ski resort, at the heart of a web of mountain bike trails … and only a few minutes from the Pyrenees top spa town, Bagnères-de-Luchon. The gîte d’étape is in perfect condition and just needs more marketing know-how to fill it 12/12.
The challenge is in the barns. These are solid stone-built buildings that are crying out for tasteful conversion into 2 more gites.
Above all, the demand for road-cycling accommodation and support is immense in the Pyrenees: this property could be converted into THE Luchon-area cycling centre.

  • Location Description: Haute-Garonne is the upper Garonne valley which stretches from the Frontonnais vineyards in the north, right up the river valley to the Spanish border on the crest of the Pyrenees to the south.

    This makes for widely constrasting landscapes, ranging from vineyards in the north, the fertile hills of the Lauragais to the east, the main flat river valley and then the foothills and high mountains of the Pyrenees in the south.

    The main city, Toulouse, dominates the département in terms of population, industry, culture and services. Home to Airbus Industrie and EADS it is also the centre of a wider aerospace industry which includes Matra, Marconi and the CNES, the French Space agency. Toulouse is also France's second university town with more than 110,000 full-time students at the three main universities and numerous 'grandes écoles'.

    South of Toulouse the arable land gradually gives way to more dramatic scenery of forest-clad hills, chateaux and tiny villages. The mountains arrive like a wall of snow. Ski resorts at Luchon and Peyragudes are frequented by Toulouse skiers and a smattering of foreigners. The Pyrenees are also peppered with spas where one can take the waters and undergo a range of medical care packages.

    Here we are on the border with the Hautes Pyrénées département, halfway up two of the mythic TdF cols: Port de Balès and Col de Peyresourde.
